D.T. Suzuki, a Japanese
Buddhist scholar, was educated at Tokyo University, and studied in the United
States from 1897-1909. He became a lecturer at Tokyo University and later taught
at leading universities in Japan, Europe, and the United States. As a leading
authority of Buddhism, he is known for his introduction of Zen Buddhism to the
West. Suzuki authored works including Essays in Zen Buddhism (3 vol.,
1927-33), The Training of the Buddhist Monk (1934), Zen Buddhism and
Its Influence on Japanese Culture (1938, rev. ed. 1959), An Introduction
to Zen Buddhism (1949), and Mysticism: Christian and Buddhist (1957).
He was greatly influential in the life of R. H. Blyth. |
