WHC Haikujunior

Haiku can be written about almost anything. Traditionally, haiku is written with a seasonal reference called "kigo." This means that it tells you about the season in which the poet was writing the poem. Many haiku poets use seasonal references while others do not. Some prefer to write about nature, while others may like writing about sports, events or activities. When a poet writes a group of haiku with a single theme, it is called a "haiku series." A series could include haiku poems about subjects such as a favorite sport, flowers in your garden, school, just to name a few. When a series takes place in a logical order, it is called a "haiku sequence." A haiku sequence can be arranged in a story, or as a sort of diary or narrative of events, such as a trip to the zoo, a ballgame or a walk through the park.

Our junior haikuists have submitted several haiku sequences and series for this issue, including a series of haiku and icon paintings by Sonia Christina Coman of Romania, which can be sent as holiday greeting e-cards. Sonia's icon gallery page is presented in the WHChaikumultimedia pages of this issue.

Another type of very short Japanese poem is called "senryu". Senryu does not necessarily have a "kigo" and are usually meant to be humorous. Joe Sircoulomb has included three senryu, one of them as senryu-art.

Bathtime Haiku Series

the bubbles go blbpt
wash hair
play with toys

act like a dolphin
even a seal
pour water out

see what sinks
see what floats
bubbles don't pop

water on something makes it sink
everything what sinks and floats
put it in the middle

I like playin' with the water
bubble sounds
fish in it

water fountain
bath water
so yummy

wear my bathing suit
make hat out of a cup
it feels like I'm the king
and the queen of the mountain

put flowers in it
not fake flowers
real flowers

it feels so relaxing
a swimming pool
'cept it's not cold
