WHC Haiku News - A Little Princess

A WHC 'Baby Shower of Haiku' for Princess Toshi-no-miya Aiko-sama

A LITTLE JAPANESE PRINCESS: Songs of Joy

When a little baby was born in the very heart of Tokyo, her father was in the room. On the afternoon, Saturday, the 1st of December, 2001, in the royal hospital on the palace ground, Crown Prince Hiro-no-miya and his wife, Princess Masako, delivered their first-born baby together, a practice never even thought about at his own birth.

Japanese people were overjoyed the arrival of a little princess and also heart-warmed to think that this quietest change must be taking place behind the chrysanthemum curtain. The happy parents have shown us Japanese people that it is as important to respect each other as man and woman as it is to meet the public obligations and responsibilities. The couple has been under pressure from those who worry about the succession of emperor's blood line since they were married about eight years ago. Princess Masako did go through a miscarriage too...  And yet, Japanese people now see these waiting years as a precious time during which they have fostered the genuine trust with each other.

Congratulations to Prince Hiro-no-miya and Princess Masako and welcome,
a tiny princess, to this world filled with wonders and love!

The poets of World Haiku Club shared this most blessed moment and voiced the welcome by writing haiku and tanka during the very first days before the princess was named Toshi-no-miya Aiko-sama.

Very humbly,

eiko yachimoto
a member of World Haiku Club
