Requiem for a Haijin - Niji Fuyuno

A Tribute to Niji Fuyuno

Dear friends,

I must announce you a sad news. Niji Fuyuno, my wife, died at 1 a.m. of February 11 by heart attack. She flew away, spreading a veil of jewels in the sky.

evening
when I put noodles
in running water -
something takes off
from my hands

Niji Fuyuno

I thank you for having received the light of her veil on your gentle eyes.

Cordially yours.

Ryu Yotsuya

-----------------------------
Cher amis,

Cordiallement,

Ryu Yotsuya

12/02/02

Many of you may know the fine poet and critic, Ryu Yotsuya, of Japan and his equally fine poet wife, Niji Fuyuno.

It is with great regret that I must tell you that Ryu has sent me the sad news in the small hours this morning that his dear wife has passed away[...]

Both Niji (which means a rainbow; Fuyuno means winter field; however, Fuyuno Niji is also a winter haiku kigo) and Ryu are friends of WHC. They featured in the last (November) issue of World Haiku Review where the renku meeting of AIR (the Association of International Renku) held
in Tokyo last October was mentioned[...]

In this renku meeting and also a week later, I met and dined with Ryu and Niji. They are most remarkable and wonderful people and a great couple with similar taste and literary and intellectual excellence[...]

I just simply would like to repeat my heart-felt condolences to Ryu and
to Niji's family[...]

Yours sincerely,

Susumu

I was deeply touched by the many reactions around the death of Niji Fuyuno. I learned to know her as a haijin spreading colours on her surroundings in a mild and humble way. She had the same effect as a rainbow making the fields more bright after the grey rain. I would like to contribute to your website with this haiku.

Rain fades away.
The winter landscape brightens,
touched by a rainbow.

The very first posting I did shortly after I was accepted to WHC through Carmen Sterba, was a C&C (comment and critique) request for my translation of a verse offered during AIR's sit-in renku session...only ten months ago...

At that time I did not mention the original poet's name; it was Niji's blossom verse. Let me share that with you now:

blossom petals
pick the strings of a notebook
to ring

As I witness many poems tributed to her on WHChaikuforumworkshop, I realize she has turned a blossom petal.

With Carmen, I took a train to attend her funeral on Valentine's Day.

It was a beautiful service for this beautiful poetess, and beloved wife of Ryu Yotsuya.
