Parade of Life:
Poems inspired by Japanese Prints

Parade of Life: Poems inspired by Japanese Prints, Selected by Paul Conneally & Alan Summers; Pub. by Poetry Can of Bristol, England, UK ISBN: 09539234-2-8 £5 & £1.50 postage and packing in the UK. Inquire for international orders.

Parade of Life: Poems inspired by Japanese Prints, is the book resulting from a collaborative project by the same name, between Poetry Can, the regional development organisation, Bristol City Museums & Art Gallery and, ultimately, the World Haiku Club.

This anthology came about from a highly successful week-long residency at the museum led by Paul Conneally, the haiku poet in residence.  Over 300 people wrote more than 400 poems from their visit, and another 200 participants were involved via the web-based competition (kukai) that Paul set up via the World Haiku Club's site.

The project took place during the sixth annual Bristol Poetry Festival 2001 and Japan 2001, a nation-wide programme of Japanese cultural events. The project aimed to encourage a wide range of participants to write haiku inspired by two exhibitions of Japanese art, including Parade of Life, a selection of woodblock prints from the museum's collection. Hundreds of wonderful haiku were written in response to the art works, and this anthology showcases some of the best, displayed in conjunction with full colour reproductions of the intriguing images that inspired them.
