  Haiku in Education

SONIA CHRISTINA COMAN

Should Haiku be Introduced to Elementary School Education in Romania? Part II

On the Establishment of The Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre in Romania

Sonia Cristina Coman
Constantza, RO

The initiative of introducing haiku to Romanian schools, discussed in the last issue of World Haiku Review, enjoys the full support of the World Haiku Club. It began as a spontaneous deed of friendship between us in Romania and some members of WHC but now it is developing into an exciting and worthy collaboration between my country and WHC. As other branches of art, haiku must be learnt from an early age. From this vital point of view, the approval, which has been granted to us by the Romanian government, of introducing haiku to schools marks a small landmark in my country's education system which is currently undergoing a radical reform.

As a specific manifestation of this decision, the government has sanctioned the establishment of a centre for learning Japanese culture and civilisation alongside with studying English and French. The centre, called the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre, is now housed at the "Dimitrie Leonida High School" in Constantza, where I live.

Let me explain, then, how the Centre has come into being and the steps I have followed to make it happen. First and foremost, I had the good fortune to be received by the Romanian Education Minister and to discuss the introduction of haiku into the curriculum of Romanian schools for the first time in the country's history. (see my article in the March issue of World Haiku Review about the broadcast where I introduced the idea in the first place).

After that initial encounter, I visited the Ministry of Education and Research where I presented my case with a prepared document to Ms. Ecaterina Andronescu, the Education Minister. I wrote this document as representing part of the world haiku movement in my capacity as the World Haiku Ambassador, a title bestowed upon me by WHC in 2000. The Minister showed my document to the Secretary of State, Mr. Vasile Molan. I received a very favourable answer from the Ministry. Here is an excerpt of it:

From The Ministry of Education and Research
The Office of the Secretary of State
To Miss Sonia Cristina Coman

Regarding the idea of introducing haiku to Romanian schools, we assure you that many young people in Romania have interest in the art that you are promoting. (...) So, we suggest you to go to the School Inspectory of Constantza for developing a haiku information center in a school or at the Children's Palace of Constantza. Depending on the results, haiku will be taught in many schools.

Yours respectfully,

Secretary of State
Vasile Molan

This letter has guided me in accomplishing the project with the help of the School Inspectory, and also of a good school in my city. And at last, the fulfillment of the project was finally achieved when we received the official approval of a Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre, and of an Interdisciplinary Experimental Class of Haiku, English, French and computers. Moreover, in accordance with the relevant law, the Centre can establish its branches in other cities of Romania.

Here are some excerpts of the establishment document of the Centre:

(...) III.
The purposes of the Centre are:

a) getting the best conditions for the study of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation

b) promoting the students' literary and artistic skills

c) organizing preparatory classes, exhibitions and national or international contests

d) initiating and developing local, national or international educational projects

e) stimulating talented youth

f) promoting the Centre's activities

g) promoting intercultural and educational exchanges between Japanese and Romanian teachers and students.

Founder:

Sonia Cristina Coman, World Haiku Ambassador, awarded by Mr. Susumu Takiguchi at the Reception of the Japanese Embassy, August 2000 London, UK.

(...) Honourable members:

Mr. Susumu Takiguchi, Chairman, The World Haiku Club;The World Haiku Festival 2000; Managing Editor, World Haiku Review,

(www.worldhaikureview.org)

Ms. Debi Bender, Editor-in-Chief, World Haiku Review

Ms. Ferris Gilli, Schools Editor, World Haiku Review, Associate Editor,
"The Heron's Nest".

(www.theheronsnest.com)

The committee involved established the headquarters and the activities of the Centre which will take place in the computer labs of "Dimitrie Leonida High School" and in the French Library of the "Amis sans frontiere" in Constantza. I must mention the strong support that we have received from Mr. Gabriel Coordonescu, the headmaster of "Dimitrie Leonida High School", Ms. Veronica Oprea, the deputy headmaster, and Mr. Radu Gheorghe, the educational headmaster.

All the activities of the Centre will be coordinated by a committee of history, literature, foreign languages and philosophy teachers led by my mother, Ms. Maria Coman who teaches history and philosophy. She had a class of Japanese history and civilisation for two years. Her students are very eager to attend the new Centre. We have already secured some members from other high schools and universities, such as Ms. Cristina Tamas, lecturer at the "Ovidius University", together with her students, a few more students from the art school (where I am also studying art) and the "Mircea cel Batran National College" and some other students from "Constantin Bratescu National College".

In the last few days, poets and writers from all over the country joined us. These people are respected haiku poets as well. Most of them are members of the Haiku Society of Constantza and few of them are members of other Haiku Societies, such as: Mr. Dan Doman, haijin and member of Romanian Haiku Society (Bucharest), Mr. Ioan Gabudean, haijin and Senior Editor of "Orfeu" (haiku review), and Doina Gabudean, haijin, both from Targu Mures (Transylvania).

At the Centre, teachers will cover the basic rules of haiku and will encourage students to create their own poems. The students will have free access to the Internet and also can exercise their English and French skills. The Centre will start its activity in the next school year, starting on September 15th, 2002 and ending on June 15th next year. Until then, we have plenty of time to prepare for the inauguration of the Centre and to gather all the materials we need.

I would also like to mention that at this moment the Romanian Educational System is going through modernisation and reform. As a result, teachers and subjects are sometimes completely eliminated. As haiku is something which has come from Japan, the official approval from the Ministry is a most enlightening proof of the importance that Romania attaches to Japan. The Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre will be all the more successful as the Romanian teenagers become more and more interested in Japanese culture and civilisation. In Romania, we have many martial arts associations where Aikido (which I like and practice), Judo, Kendo, Karate-do or Kyu-do are taught in special dojo halls. The teaching includes lessons of Japanese meditation and other disciplines which are taught both by Romanian and non-Romanian masters.

The committee has established guidelines of the use of the Centre for various activities:

a) The students attending the Centre shall be selected by their responsible teachers or form masters, depending on their interests in literature and haiku, their computer and English skills.

b) The Centre will make use of Albatross haiku magazine, edited by Mr. Ion Codrescu, a well-known and respected haiku poet and artist. It will also use other materials (books, reviews, audio and video records, etc) which I hope to receive from different organisations in Romania and abroad. All these materials will be used by the students and by the teachers alike in their lessons.

c) The teachers and students will be encouraged to subscribe to the World Haiku Club and practice haiku and learn more about it by posting their works to its mailing lists, exchanging comments and views with other members and also by sending their poems for publication in the beginner's section of World Haiku Review, WHC's comprehensive online magazine .

d) Lessons will be given in classrooms, computer labs, or during ginko walks. Also, the teachers will organize workshops of haiku, haibun and photo-haiku (haishin).

e) The prospectus will include both theoretical information and practical applications, such as:

  • Learning how to write haiku and participating in international haiku contests;
  • Using the Internet for viewing the most important haiku and Japan-related websites in the world;
  • Making a link between the Centre's website and the WHC's haiku school website.
  • Spreading the Centre's news at the WHF2002/Basho Journey, taking place in Yuwa Town, Akita, Japan in September this year.
  • Discussing good haiku poems, haiga, haibun, tanka, etc;
  • Creating photo-haiku works, which will be selected for different national and international exhibitions and contests;
  • Inviting Romanian or foreign haiku masters to our Centre as visiting instructors. We hope that Mr. Susumu Takiguchi will be our first honourable guest!

f) The lessons which will be taught in our Centre, in addition to haiku, will be:

  • General information on Japanese history, culture and civilisation;
  • Between legend and reality, the Japanese Miracle;
  • Japanese family life;
  • Relationships between Japanese literature and Asian philosophy (Buddhism and Zen will contribute to a better understanding of haiku, which is not just poetry but a way of life), traditional arts and ceremonies, etc;
  • Masters of the Japanese literature of today and yesterday;
  • Martial arts (Aikido, Kendo, Judo, Karate-do, Kyu-do, etc);
  • Japan as seen by world travellers;
  • A documentary regarding the presence of haiku in Romanian literature of XIX and XX centuries; some of the most important Romanian poets wrote haiku, such as Vasile Alecsandri, Alexandru Stamatiad, Ion Pillat, Marin Sorescu, Nichita Stanescu and Adrian Paunescu.

g) A logo of the Centre will be created and promoted.

Our city, Constantza and the beautiful City of Yokohama are friend cities from a long time ago. As is symbolised by this "friend cities" tie, our two countries have enjoyed friendly relationship for many years. I therefore would like to suggest that we dedicate the establishment of our Centre to the celebration of 100 years of Japanese-Romanian diplomatic relationship (1902-2002).

The Great Master, Matsuo Basho, stressed that a real haiku was beyond time and place, emphasizing in this way its universality, that is fueki ryuko. Moreover, the most important value of Basho's poetry is fuga-no-makoto (the poetic truth). Now, over three centuries after his death, we do realize how contemporary Basho still is!

the whole world

God loves us all
