  WHCtournament - Winners &  Awards

Announcement of Awards
WHC 1st Global Haiku Tournament

The First WHC Global Haiku Tournament, starting in April 2002, ended in success at the end of June, establishing itself as a viable and popular annual event. It was a three-month marathon tournament but behind the scenes there had been a lot of hard work put into it. During the tournament, contesting teams, their supporters and general spectators all joined in and created an exciting, tough and useful exercise with which to learn and enjoy haiku in a light-hearted and playful manner. Tempers flared sometimes, ego raised its ugly head other times, but eventually everyone cottoned on as to the purposes of the Tournament and fought in earnest. It was all a learning process of haiku and renku. After such a close and good fight, now it’s time for celebrations. Celebrations of getting together of haiku-loving people in the world –- celebrations of haiku literature itself. We have tried to recreate such a stormy and wonderful atmosphere as much as possible in the pages of World Haiku Review. We hope you will enjoy it just as much as a few hundred poets did online during April, May and June. The WHC Global Haiku Tournament is here to stay. A small history was made in the world haiku community.

WHCtournament was sponsored and awarded by The Japan Times.

Prizes (books) are to be presented to:
  • the First Place Team - awarded by WHC
  • the Best Three Haiku & Honorable Mention (selected by judges) - awarded by The Japan Times
