WHC Haikujunior - Workshops

Haiku by Romanian students

A Ginko at the Black Sea Coast, a meeting of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre, Romania

Sonia Christina Coman
Contstantza, Romania

nori pe cer--

prin fum
siluete de masini

clouds in the sky--
through smoke
car silhouettes
larma copiilor
patrunde-n fiecare ungher--
strada pe-nserat

in every corner
children's noise--
a street at nightfall
nimic nu exista--
nici aceasta padure
nici drumul meu lung

nothing exists--
neither the woods
nor my long way
Apetroaie Sandu Nicusor, 17
Member of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre
Dimitrie Leonida High School

stol de randunele--
florile se deschid
in lumina rasaritului

a flock of sparrows--
flowers open
in the sunrise light
Ardeleanu Daiana, 14
Member of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre
Art School of Constantza

 luna plina--
florile se risipesc
in bataia vantului

full moon--
flowers scatter
in the gust of wind
Dumitrascu Bianca, 14
Member of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre
Art School of Constantza

mingea se rostogoleste--
sportivi prabusiti
cu ranile deschise

the ball turns--
fallen sportsmen
with bloody wounds
Istrate Nicoleta, 14
Member of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre
Art School of Constantza

un trandafir pluteste

pe apele tulburi--
liniste

a rose floats
on the muddy water--
silence
o frunza moarta
dusa de briza--
copii mergand

a fallen leaf
carried by the breeze--
children walk
Stefanian Maria, 14
Member of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre

Through the dedication and work of Sonia Cristina Coman, WHC's World Haiku Ambassador, the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre has been founded in Romania. Haiku is being introduced to the school children and haiku lessons have been presented and distributed to teachers and haiku poets. The series of haiku lessons, written by WHC Director of Schools, Mrs. Ferris Gilli, were produced in collaboration with WHC at the request of Miss Coman. The translations were overseen and edited by Ms. Laura Vacenu, Preseident of the Haiku society of Constantza.

Miss Coman's essay-report, Part III of Should Haiku be Introduced to Elementary School Education in Romania? appears in this issue's feature column, "Haiku in Education". In her report, you can read about the exciting beginnings of "Haiku in Romanian Education: The Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre of Constantza, Romania".

To date, one of the most successful meetings of the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre (founded by Miss Coman) has been a ginko (haiku walk) at the Black Sea Coast. This meeting was in honour of WHC's World Haiku Festival 2002, which took place at Yuwa-Town, Akita, Japan, in September 2002. The  poems presented here are the first attempts of the Romanian high-school participants in writing haiku. They were translated into English during a haiku meeting at the Japanese Culture and Civilisation Centre, in which the students read their poems, composed at the ginko. Two Romanian haiku poets, Ms. Laura Vaceanu, President of the Haiku Society of Constantza, and Mr. Radu Patrichi, Vice-President of the Haiku Society of Constantza, were invited to the meeting to present their understanding of haiku to the students.

Miss Coman writes: "For now, students are learning what means to write haiku. With time, students are expected to write more and more poems and, hopefully, better and better."
