Crown Hills City Learning Centre
"Excellence in Cities" Summer Workshop Haiku

by the children of Leisester Somaliland, England

a lovely day
the woman next door
washes her cat

Samson Abdillahi (age 12)

humid
a breath of fresh air
through my scarf

Ayan Suleman (age 14)

distant mist
two men stare into
our blue river

Rugia Mohammed (13)

nice shoes
a man and his friends
sing songs and dance

Amal Abdale (12)

closed eyes
the sound of the wind
in my hair

Mustafa (12)

I am pleased to be able to share some haiku written in workshop with me during a Summer School organised jointly by Leicester City Council Education Department and the Leicester Somaliland Community. The sessions took place in the new Crown Hills City Learning Centre, part of the Government's "Excellence in Cities" initiative.

These are haiku produced by 11 to 14 year old Somali children from Leicester's Somaliland community. The children have been for the most part brought up in Holland before moving to the UK and have some problems with English and Somali - preferring, for the moment, to speak Dutch in conversation with each other - it was fascinating to see them grasp haiku and start to write. On this page are a few of their first tentative haiku.
