Lust for Life

i had to have him. instead i told him i had to have some gum. chicklets. an unthreatening brand. i told him to buy me three packs. then i emptied them in my mouth and chewed like crazy. my father once told me that you can't sound overly bright chewing a wad of gum. the guy took me to an absurdly expensive bar and
spoke of bakhtin and habermas to his reflection. it was a gorgeous one. i pretended not to get it.

smoke and mirrors --
in the velvet of night
i will be your stranger

i told him i didn't care about his mind. that i wasn't overly bright. i chewed more gum. i drank more booze. he ripped off his shirt outside the bar. i marvelled at his build. my dead father shook his head half in amusement and half in disbelief. this guy had a great bike. once in his mirrored lift, he pushed me up against a side and i caught the infinity of his back.

wild gardenia scent --
his blood from my trans-siberian
red nails drips

the loft was all bed as he pulled me down and the last i can recall before wanting eternity and us to collide and grasping his long blond hair and gasping for breath was Iggy Pop crooning "Lust for Life" through a Wilson WATT Puppy*.

stars holding time still --
spaces of silence crushed
in the sheets

afterwards, i lift his sleeping leg from across my belly and the whole room moves in one sweeping mirrored reflection. luckily the guy's prowess equals his insanity. i slip into my leather boots and jacket and out to the street to hail a taxi.

the sun
has drained the sky pale blue --
a fresh bruise darkens.

*Wilson WATT Puppy - an astronomically costly loudspeaker system.
