Symbiotic, Solo and Forked Rengay
Selected by D.W. Bender

The Coastal Strand

hortensia anderson

karina klesko
Louisiana, USA

ocean dawn --
a golden sky rolls
over the shoreline

sand pipers play
as a boy gathers bay beans

.
velvety sea-grapes
along the coastal strand
ripe on our tongues

half-moon
corals mate along the reef
on the dark side of day

as dusk fades into night
ghost crabs scuttle

caught
in a fisherman's net
the morning star

Rise and Fall

power lines
stretch into the clouds --
a brown-falcon circles

fine leaf sencha settles
to the bottom of the bowl

bushfire season --
the dogwood explodes
into swirling sparks

full moon above --
in patches of soft earth
we find deer tracks

steering towards the horizon
sails billow with the wind

purple grape clusters
embroidered on a silk gown
rise and fall

A Twist of Smoke

A "zip" rengay

John E. Carley

so different..from the green
...................that never was..the autumn leaves

.....................sheaves of gold..guard the turtle pond..basking sun

....................................a myrtle blush..and all undone
..........we tumble..in the bracken

......................................a table set..with linen
.............................................a caco*..and a bumble bee*

..................skyward drifts..a twist of smoke..the serried eaves

...........................................shrift..amidst the din
.........................of flapping geese..fires stoke the firmament

A caco is a small pomegranate native to Italy

broken branches
and late snow
mat the stream's edge

dead trees silent in the wind
cold breeze numbs my fingers

on the far slope
silver-wattle
still with spring blossom

at St Crispin's Well
through dogwood leaves
a green-rosella

in the shade
bush fly on a food wrapper

after the waterfall
our voices brush past
a stand of myrtles

Without a Trace

A "crystalline" rengay, completed December, 2002

along the surf...a crab races
over and over the finish line....

a green bottle tethered by seaweed
rolls back and forth...beneath the waves

the quell of laughter in the wind
children..build a fortress...pail by pail

these empty footprints in the sand
fill with foam
...and leave without a trace

herring gulls strut up and down the docks
an artist's canvas in pastels

stormclouds gather
...in the distance
the horizon slowly disappears

opening our shoebox

moonlight
a grain of salt shining
in the broken shell

fisherman's wharf
the children pop kelp pods

a cormorant slices
the pine tree's reflection -
morning silence

ocean flora
up through a knothole
in the boardwalk

a seagull's underfeather
lost to autumn wind

opening our shoebox
all these treasures we
found on holiday

carp flags

Autumn lonliness--
rising through clouds
the harvest moon.

i dress for halloween
in front of our woodstove

A hotter bath;
steam melts the frost
on my windowpane.

ice-laden tree
snowbirds still pull berries
from its bough

Thermometer below zero;
sun-dogs bracketing the sun.

spring wind
more than enough to fill
all the carp flags

tamales

Solo rengay
Victor Ortiz
California, USA

first night of winter
we spread corn masa and
stories on husks

red chile stains
the inside of her sweatshirt

chilly rain--
dipping mexican sweet bread
in hot chocolate

marriage announcement
we test a tamale
for doneness

hands slip in and out
of the warm dough

moonset
our laughter swells
the kitchen

salty tears

beached whales --
their last breaths
on the outgoing tide  /rm

beneath silent clouds
gulls keening   /gm

a ghostly lament
over the troller's sonar
voices of dolphins  /a

ominous sky
the lone sailor thinks of home  /rm

on the sand -
even a cracked conch
still bellows  /gm

southern cross -
salty tears blowing in the wind  /a
