"REAL" HAIKU" (VANGUARD HAIKU) & SEQUENCES, TANKA & FREE VERSE

Space Shuttle Columbia
February 1, 2003

travelling the blue of infinity
you all returned, not alive...|
but returned to the earth

true valour and love
purified in the most tragic fire
ashes on mother soil

no outrageous calamities
have succeeded in vanquishing
the will of the Americans

when something good ends
something better begins to germinate --
in the United States of America

in the noble death
is re-affirmed human dignity,
life''s sublimity

by your sacrifice
you shall live in our heart
in eternity

FREE VERSE TRIBUTES

the night sky
empties a handful
of humans

how brief but
bright their light
a nudge of lesser air
rises... rises
the sounds unheard

a mere mote dashes
and flashes some
message of surrender
near the limit
of Earth's embrace

spirits on their way
on their way spirited
closer to release

envied a final moment

with deep sympathy

ai... chibi (Dennis Holmes)
Gergia, USA
yonder above the vast expanse
how puny the earth looks
a blue-white speck adrift
almost in nothingness

just for a little while there
I sensed not only loneliness
but fragile hope for humankind
in its incessant search
for peace

Victor P. Gendrano
PH/California, USA

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA -- 29 January 2003

"In the retina of my eye, the whole Earth and the sky could be seen
reflected, so I called all the crew members one by one, and they saw it, and everybody said, 'Oh, wow!'" -Kalpana Chawla

Astronauts
seeing the world
seeing themselves

Elbert Pruitt
