Carol Raisfeld, New York, USA - Art Haiku

Comment by Roderick Stewart: Contrast between soft white snow and grinding, hard stones in the haiku is reaffirmed in the granular texture of the image's stone elements. The sound becomes the image. The patch of snow upon the stone lantern echoes the moon in the haiku. Text-wrapping of the haiku around the lantern and the placement of the haiku -- diagonally balanced by the praying figure -- works very well. Subtle lighting effect (like moonlight) on the lantern gives it a dimensionality which makes it jump out of the picture.
