Roderick Stewart: Subtle colours and out-of-focus background work
very well with the delicacy of the plum blossom's perfect bud, and also adds to
the sense of other-world mystery, expressed in the haiku. A sense of suspense is
beautifully portrayed in the gods' crowding 'round, waiting for the bud's birth
into a blossom. Our knowledge of the plum blossom's transient life makes this
suspenseful moment all the more poignant. |
