EDITOR'S WELCOME
Dear haiku readers and
poets,
Welcome to "Treetops"! This column exists for two
purposes: (1) to present fine haiku by poets from around
the world, and (2) to be a source of inspiration for
haiku writers. If you have recently begun your haiku
journey, congratulations! As I'm sure you've realized by
now, there is no magic formula for writing excellent
haiku. However, aspiring haiku poets who do the
following things will probably find success:
-
Read and carefully
study excellent haiku.
-
Become acquainted with haiku history and tradition.
-
Learn certain basic
guidelines and apply them to their work.
-
Follow their own
paths, while being unafraid to make side trips.
-
Be willing to
consider writing tips from established haiku poets.
-
Write haiku, write
haiku, write haiku.
A good haiku begins with
these ingredients: concrete imagery, freshness, focus,
sense of season, and immediacy. Other key elements are
conciseness (clarity, brevity), balance of humanity and
nature, effective juxtaposition, caesura, sense of mood,
common language, natural syntax, and poet invisibility.
The poet's instinct for perceiving haiku when they happen and the right
combinations of components create memorable haiku. I hope you may find something
of value in "HAIKU CONNECTIONS," a brief introduction to contemporary
English-language haiku.
Yours in haiku spirit,
Ferris Gilli
