EDITOR'S COMMENTS:

Welcome to the haibun section of the World Haiku Review. In this issue, the work of both old hands and newcomers to haibun composition is featured. As you will see, contemporary haibun has travelled a long way since Basho launched the genre by infusing his travel journals with a poetic prose and haiku.

Contemporary haibun includes writing about a day-to-day or longer term experience that somehow stands out. The content can include an experience in the human community, a memory, a dream, a fantasy, or, as in Basho's case, an account of a journey through the countryside. Modern haibun tends to be succinct, to utilize poetic prose, to describe events and places more than philosophize or "tell."

If you would like to read more about haibun composition, check the articles featured in the Rucksack section [to the left]. If you are interested in writing haibun, the World Haiku Club's Haibun Forum is a place to try your hand. Forum members regularly submit writing and critique the writing of others. If you are interested in submitting your work to journals, I suggest that you start with the list of online journals on the left.

Special thanks to my partners Johnye Strickland and Carol Raisfeld for their help in preparing this section of the World Haiku Review.
