GRANDDAUGHTER.............
Chris Bullock, CA
We are taking our adopted daughter's baby back to her after caring for the baby overnight. Danielle is talking about maybe moving away, back to her biological family in Texas. I put Kaylin in her car seat and carry seat and baby out to the car. It's a west coast December morning, a few days before Christmas; shining from behind clouds, the sun lights strips of salal, pine cones lying on the wet grass. The baby squirms in the seat, restless at the constriction, hungry too. I feed her some of her bottle; then it's time to go. I cry, fearing this will be the last overnight. A pileated woodpecker is tapping at a cedar tree above the pond. Two California quail search for seeds under the smaller cherry tree.
the baby leaves; wood—
pecker taps cedar; even
my tears feed something.
