SUNSET IN CHACO..............
Maggi Sullivan Godman, US

I stand near the warm, hand-dressed sandstone blocks of the outer wall of the Great Kiva, Casa Rinconada. Breezes rustle the rabbit brush and chamisa—a raven's raucous cry startles me.

Crimson and gold streak the sky over the rim of the canyon, and Chaco Wash winds its water-carved way toward the west. Shadows lengthen—the colors fade. In the distance a rabbit shrieks, the evening meal of a silent owl.

Starlight gives me a glimpse of the empty firepits, below, in the depths of the roofless kiva. A shiver, not entirely from the quickly chilling night air.
