SHADOWS............
Elizabeth
Howard, US
From
the cafe window, I view the lake, coves reaching into the hump-backed hills
like giant green fingers. Stark oak shadows slant down the hills to lacy willows
at water's edge.

Brown
leaves, weary of winter, lift and sail after swallows flitting over the water,
orange throats glinting in the sun. High overhead, hawks kettle, riding the
thermals. I think of children at the fair, the joy of merry-go-round and Ferris
wheel, the jingle of music. Skittish Canada geese skim the water honking, goose
shimmer blending with lake shimmer.
