SHADOWS............
Elizabeth Howard, US

From the cafe window, I view the lake, coves reaching into the hump-backed hills like giant green fingers. Stark oak shadows slant down the hills to lacy willows at water's edge.

a canvasback dives
pops up downstream
near a tree snag

Brown leaves, weary of winter, lift and sail after swallows flitting over the water, orange throats glinting in the sun. High overhead, hawks kettle, riding the thermals. I think of children at the fair, the joy of merry-go-round and Ferris wheel, the jingle of music. Skittish Canada geese skim the water honking, goose shimmer blending with lake shimmer.

wind rising
a lone fisherman
battles the white caps
