Machiko Kusahara is a scholar in media art and theory, who has been publishing
and curating in the interdisciplinary field connecting art, science, technology,
culture, sociology and history. She has BA from International Christian
University in Tokyo, and is given Ph.D in engineering from University of Tokyo
for her theoretical research in this field. After working as an independent
curator and writer since early 80s, she has taught media art theory and practice
full time since 1994. Her recent research is around the notion of life and
reality in digital era in relation to the traditional concept on these issues in
each society. At the same time she has been researching on creative use of media
technology for cultural contents. In 90s she was involved in developing a VR
system with her colleagues and students.
Her major activities are in research, teaching, writing, curating, and planning.
She is a chief jury of the Art Division of the Media Arts Festival sponsored by
the Japanese Government, co-founder of Digital Image, Japan’s largest
independent group of digital artists with more than 250 members, had served as
an advisor with contract for NTT/ICC (InterCommunication Center) for years since
its foundation. She was also involved in launching Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of
Photography. Her commitment includes the Science Foundation of Japan, the Art
Council of Japan, among many other institutions.
She served as a jury for major media art competitions such as SIGGRAPH, Ars
Electronica, SF MOMA Webby Award, Interactive Media Festival, to name a few. She
has also served as a paper jury for international academic conferences such as
ISEA. She has been invited to speak at major international conferences including
SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica, Annecy International Animation Festival, IMAGINA, and
the Banff Centre, to name a few. She curated exhibitions for NTT/ICC, Nagoya
Design Expo, Sony Music, NHK, the City of Kobe, among many others.
She has published many articles on professional publications in art, design and
culture. including Quarterly InterCommunication, AXIS, BT, Art Asia Pacific, and
Kunstforum Inernational. Essays in media art and culture have been published
from MIT Press, Springer, and other academic publisher. Recent articles include:
