DEADLINE FOR AUTUMN ISSUE (WHR 5-2): Midnight Friday, 30 September 2005, your local time.


1. WHO CAN SUBMIT: Submissions are open world-wide to readers of the World Haiku Review online

2. Submit up to 15 original, unpublished haiku (haiku that have not previously appeared in print journals or in on-line journals by editorial selection).

3. Poems that have appeared on Internet mailing lists such as WHCworkshop, and WHCbeginners, and/or non-WHC mailing lists, but have not otherwise been published, are eligible.

4. The column will feature a "Editors Choice" selection of one haiku, including a brief kansho.  On some occasions, a guest editor may be invited to choose haiku for TREETOPS. Selections are made on merit.

5. Essential elements of haiku:

Concrete imagery
Focus
Conciseness (clarity, brevity)
Effective juxtaposition
Caesura
Immediacy
Natural syntax
Common language
Balance of humanity and nature
Sense of mood
Sense of season

6. Avoid stale, hackneyed presentations. Whatever the topic, haiku should present a fresh view of a subject or event, offering new insight to the reader.

7. Include your name (and nom de plume, if applicable); Surname in capital letters (EX: John BUNYON; Sara Elizabeth JAMES; SUZUKI Tatsuo, Susumu TAKIGUCHI;

Include your state or province, and country of residence (if more than one, please include all);

Include your e-mail address.

8. Works in non-English languages must be accompanied by good English translation, which will be used for selection purposes.

9. Single-space poems unless special formatting is required.

10. Please use HTML formatted e-mail (not "Plain Text" or MS Word format). Please type your haiku directly onto the body of the e-mail; do not copy and paste your text into the e-mail from a word-processing document.

11. Send submissions in the main body of the e-mail, not as an attached file.
